PROPOSED URANIUM MINE

There has been a lot of debate surrounding the Angela Pamela Uranium Project proposed for Central Australia and in particular some concerns about issues relating to dust and water.

I support mining in the Northern Territory and I do think that Uranium should be at least considered as an alternative energy scource in our efforts to address climate change. However, I will only support the Angela Pamela project if it reaches the highest environmental standards.

Once again, this issue highlights the need for an Independent EPA to monitor a project like this.

Please see the transcript of an e-mail I received from Cameco, which discusses some of the issues associated with the project. I will include this and any other information on this website and would encourage you to send me any feedback or alternative views you have on this issue.

Edited email from Cameco:

We are in the process of preparing a detailed information piece on the Alice Springs water supply and the relationship there-off to the Angela deposit as we understand it currently. This document should be ready for distribution towards mid September.

We are conducting exploration activities at this stage and it is pre-emptive to talk about any impact that mining might or might not have on the towns water supply, firstly because our studies and investigations into the geo-hydrology is still ongoing, and secondly because no mining or tailings design studies have been conducted, which renders the impact assessment there-off impossible.

Yes, we know that the Mereenie Aquifer passes below the Angela deposit at depth (could be as much as 3000 m below), but all indications at this stage (early results from investigations) point towards that there is no groundwater connectivity between the Angela deposit and the town’s water supply.

Should we proceed to the point where we come to the conclusion that the deposit is economically viable, and we want to proceed to apply for a mining license, we would have to complete an Environmental Impact Assessment, which would have to address all the water aspects as well. This will be assessed by the authorities before any decision is made regarding granting any mining license.
